Van Hoople (b. 1934)
American artist Van Hoople was born in Chicago in 1934 and studied fine arts at the University of Texas before continuing his studies at the ArtCenter in Los Angeles. He later apprenticed at Paramount Studios in Hollywood under scenic art director P. T. Blackburn, where he also worked as a set designer.
Van Hoople’s mid-century paintings are distinguished by their deeply textured, sculptural surfaces and bold, atmospheric color. His work ranges from landscapes and city scenes to more abstract and stylized compositions, often with an almost architectural quality created through heavy impasto.
Beginning in 1957, Van Hoople was represented exclusively by Hillside: House of Originals, and his work became closely associated with the distinctive visual language of mid-century interiors. Today, his richly textured paintings remain especially compelling for the way they bring color, movement, and dimension to a room.
